There are many factors that determine whether or not your donkey needs to be rugged. These including its age – particularly young or old donkeys will benefit from being rugged – its health and whether your donkey spends most of its time in a stable or outdoors. A stabled donkey won’t move as much, so could be more prone to the cold.

Ruggles’ donkey stable rugs are available in increments of 3”, so you‘re guaranteed to get the perfect fit. But if your donkey does fall in between sizes, we suggest choosing the next size up to keep your donkey comfortable.

Donkeys Need A Different Fit

A donkey has different proportions to a horse or pony. A donkey’s shoulders are narrower and older donkeys do have narrower hindquarters and any rug must take these into account. And it’s for these reasons that choosing a pony rug in the smallest size won’t work. An ill-fitting rug can, in extreme cases, cause serious distress by preventing the donkey’s ability to walk properly as the rug can drop too far down in front of its legs.
