What is the best way to care for my rug?

If your washing machine is large enough, you can easily wash a rug yourself. For indoor rugs such as stable rugs and fleeces or fly rugs, we would recommend a gentle, warm wash using a non-biological cleaning product. Otherwise, there are professional rug cleaning companies who specialise in this area.

Turnout rugs must only be stored if they are properly dried out otherwise the fabrics will get damaged. Turnout rugs need to be washed with a non-biological product. Biological products will destroy the waterproofing, and if reproofing either a ‘wash in’ or spray on proofer should be used. If you are doing this yourself, you need to make sure that any biological products have been fully removed first. We recommend running the machine empty, on a hot wash, to ensure all traces are gone.

How do I measure my horse/shetland/pony for a rug?

Regardless of the size of the horse, to get a good fit you need to measure from the middle of the chest, round the shoulder and then along the side of the horse to the back leg approximately in line with the top of the tail.

Ruggles has three ranges of rugs:
Shetland/miniature/donkey, horse & pony, and heavy horse. The heavy horse range is designed for those types that are big at the chest and shoulder and need the rug to be deeper down the sides.

Rugs sizes come in feet and inches and are sized in 3-inch increments. If you’ve measured in inches then divide this by 12 to give you the measurement in feet and inches.

For example:
63 inches / 12 = 5.25

Most horses fall between rug sizes. In this case we recommend you go up and not down as there is plenty of adjustment at the chest on all Ruggles rugs.

If you are unsure which range would be appropriate for your horse, please get in touch and we can help.

How can I be sure my rug is a good fit?

We recommend you try the rug on your horse (even if it is for later in the year) to check for size and fit. If it’s not quite right, you can exchange whilst the rugs are still in stock.

When testing, make sure you adjust the chest straps, leg straps (if turnout) and surcingles to get a good fit.  Encourage your horse to put its muzzle to the ground (grazing position) and check that it’s not too tight at the chest and that the rug is giving adequate coverage on hind quarters. If the top of the tail flap (if fitted) is hanging more than an inch or two below the top of the tail, then the rug is too big.

How should surcingles and leg straps be adjusted on a rug?

Most rugs have surcingle straps or a belly band. Surcingles need to be crossed under the belly, for example, the offside front strap goes to the nearside backend and vice versa. The straps then need to be adjusted so that when fastened up they are loose enough not to cause rubbing or restriction when the horse is rolling/moving about, but not so generous that there is the potential for the horse to be able to get a leg through when rolling.

All Ruggles turnouts have leg straps, but these are not stitched in, so you have the option to remove. If fitted, they need to be looped. So, for example if fitting nearside first then take that leg strap and clip it to the nearside D-ring on the rug. Then take the other leg strap but loop it through the nearside strap so effectively ‘crossing’ the straps. This way there is less risk of rubbing/friction. They should not be so loose that there is a risk of the horse catching when rolling or rubbing.
